The Making of a Jewish Studies Scholar
Fifty years ago, when Sam Melton established The Ohio State University’s Samuel M. Melton Center for Jewish Studies, I was a second-year graduate student finishing my Master’s thesis. Even now, I remember how thrilled—and nervous— I was when I was invited to the Center’s inaugural celebratory dinner. Returning to OSU to give this year’s Pearl and Troy Feibel Lecture provides the opportunity to reflect both on the Melton Center’s transformative role in advancing Jewish Studies and to acknowledge its contributions to the making of this historian.
